Dr. Stuart A. Souders is a board certified radiologist dedicated to breast imaging. He is a “Cornhusker”, born and raised in Nebraska. He was graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in zoology. He received his M. D. degree from the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. He did his internship at the Queen’s Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii. He served 4 years in the Army in Germany as a Flight Surgeon. After his discharge, he did his radiology residency at Duke University Medical Center. He practiced in Honolulu for two years, then returned to the University of Southern California Los Angeles County Hospital and did a two year fellowship in Neuroradiology. He did an additional 6 months fellowship in Computed Tomography and Ultrasound.
In 1994 he attended a two week course presented by the world renowned Lazslo Tabar, M.D. Dr. Tabar influenced him greatly. Dr. Souders realized his true passion was using his skills to detect breast cancer. He very early began to use his interventional skills to do biopsies percutaneously eliminating the need for women to undergo surgery for diagnosis. He was working at the Kaiser hospital in Fontana at the time. He was asked to take over the supervision of the mammography program. While there he initated batch reading of mammograms, percutaneous biopsies under ultrasound guidance, and helped set up a breast clinic where women would come for a diagnostic workup and could get answers at the time they presented for their workup. He held conferences for the technologists and the other medical staff.
Before joining the BCICOC, he practiced with Breastlink for four years as the dedicated breast imager at the offices in Torrance and Manhattan Beach. He worked closely with Drs John Link and James Waisman.
Since that time when Dr. Tabar first stimulated his interest, he has never looked back. He has attended hundreds of hours of meetings dedicated to breast disease. He has a burning passion for detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages. He is known for his compassion and helpfulness and is well liked and respected by his patients.
He has lived in Southern California for 25 years. He is married and the father of a son who is a lawyer, and a daughter who is a teacher. When he has time he loves to sail and ski.
